Learn: The AI education emergency

For students

The short answer

AI can help you learn or help you skip learning, and the studies show the difference. Students who leaned on an unrestricted chatbot for math practice scored lower on their own exam later. Students who used a tutor built to make them think did better. Employers expect about 39% of the skills workers use today to change by 2030.

Finishing is not learning

High school students who practiced math with an unrestricted chatbot got better practice grades, then scored 17% lower on their own exam than students who never used it. Students with a tutor version that made them work through the problem avoided most of that drop econpapers.repec.org.

In a small MIT lab study of 54 people, those who wrote essays with ChatGPT showed less brain connectivity on EEG and had more trouble quoting their own essays than those who wrote without tools arxiv.org. It is a preprint and its authors call the conclusions preliminary.

When AI helps you learn

In a Harvard physics course, students who used a carefully designed AI tutor at home learned more, in less time, than students in a strong in-class lesson, and reported feeling more engaged pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.

Your jobs are changing

Employers surveyed for the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 expect about 39% of the skills workers use today to change or become outdated by 2030, and expect 170 million jobs to appear and 92 million to disappear worldwide unleash.ai.
